About this experience
From the mid-1950s until the 1990s, Home Savings and Loan commissioned the Millard Sheets and his studio of artists to create art and architecture that reflected Southern California history and the dreams of a relaxed retirement. Their artistry, from leaping dolphins to lush orange groves, from calm scenes of milkmaids to train-hopping moments from the Old West, enrich the landscape of Orange County's cities and suburbs.
Professor Adam Arenson, author of the award-winning Banking on Beauty: Millard Sheets and Midcentury Commercial Architecture in California, will lead a tour of Orange County locations, explaining the work of the Millard Sheets Studio and showing details up close.
Dr. Arenson has conducted sold-out tours in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and Claremont; this is his first time bringing his expertise on-site to these Orange County locations.
His lively presentation will explain the origins of these artworks and how they were made, and what preservation challenges remain.
