About this experience
Montefalco, home of the famous Montefalco and Sagrantino wines, is called “Umbrian Balcony” because of its spectacular position on a hill overlooking the wonderful Umbrian Valley, but it is also famous for its history and artistic wonders!
Thanks to a knowledgeable and passionate guide, you will discover its Roman origins and medieval architecture, strolling through fascinating and picturesque alleys.
You will visit the elegant church of Santa Chiara della Croce, built by the Saint herself, who was buried there in 1308, and rebuilt in the following centuries. Walking along the beautifully preserved medieval walls, you will pass through Porta Sant’Agostino, dominated by an imposing crenellated tower, reaching the fascinating church of Sant’Agostino, decorated by 14th-century frescoes by the famous Gothic painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Piazza del Comune, the main square of Montefalco, is located at the top of the hill and is surrounded by amazing palaces built in the Middle Ages, such as Palazzo Langeli and Palazzo Comunale.
Lastly, you will visit the wonderful church-museum of Saint Francis, where you will admire important frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, depicting the Stories of the life of Saint Francis, and by Perugino, Raphael’s master, who painted here a beautiful Nativity Scene.
