About this experience
It is the most recognizable building in Vatican City. Its 2.3-hectare dome is a prominent feature of the skyline of Rome. In Catholic and Christian traditions, it is regarded as one of the holiest sites. Its titular, St. Peter, who served as the leader of the twelve Apostles of Jesus, the first Bishop of Antioch, and eventually the first Bishop of Rome, making him the first Pope, is traditionally buried there. The construction of the basilica took place from April 18, 1506, and 1615. Ultimately, on November 18, 1626, Pope Urban gave the Basilica a ceremonial dedication.
St. Peter's Basilica is not the most important of Rome's major basilicas, nor is it the Pope's formal residence. The Pope's cathedral is the Arch Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is also the mother church of all churches in communion with the Catholic Church.
