About this experience
Submerge yourself in ancient history at the captivating palaeoanthropological site of Olduvai Gorge. It is one of the most important in the world. Set between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, you will learn about mankind’s history, an excellent new museum, and beautiful views – and an opportunity to visit an active dig.
You will view a replica of Laetoli Footprints, giving you the earliest evidence of bipedalism. Find out its significance to modern research. You will be driven down to visit the gorge itself and learn what Mary and Louis Leakey discovered about early hominin remains. Go through the information board on site.
Arrange in advance for a member of staff to take you to active dig sites. Olduvai Gorge is the focus of a number of ongoing studies. If you are lucky, chat with scientists between June and October.
Gaze at a curious phenomenon, a shifting sand dune just 30 minutes’ drive from Olduvai. This dune moves around 10m a year, blown by the prevailing wind.
