Pacaya Volcano Day Trip from Antigua

Pacaya Volcano (2,552 m / 8,370 ft) is one of Guatemala’s most stunning and accessible volcanic landscapes, located within its own national park just outside the city. This moderate, intermediate-level excursion is perfect for travelers looking for a rewarding but manageable challenge, making it a great choice for families or as a warm-up before facing larger volcanoes like Acatenango and Fire. For ease, local horses can be rented at the start of the trail. We left Antigua at 7:00 on a scenic 1.3 hour journey to the start of the trail. As we ascend a network of trails, wide views of the highlands of Guatemala begin to unfold. Arriving at the foothills of the volcano, we explore the spectacular fields of petrified lava, walking along the rugged volcanic rock, feeling the heat of geothermal hot spots and even grilling marshmallows on the warm ground.
