NAPLES DAYLIGHT Day trip from Naples

The Greek philosopher Homer, in his epic poem the Odyssey, tells the story of Ulysses and his travels to the Italian coasts. As he approached these waters he encountered sirens who tried to lure sailors into the sea with their enchanting song, and then kill them. Ulysses, already warned by the sorceress Circe, put wax plugs in the ears of his sailing companions and tied himself to the mast of the ship, to resist the attractive creatures: one of these, the mermaid Parthenope, landed on the islet of Megaride, where the Castello dell'Ovo stands. Hence the other name of Naples, Partenope.
