About this experience
Discover Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's most lavishly decorated shrines, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate that ruled for over 250 years. Established in 1617, the complex blends Shinto and Buddhist elements.
After meeting at Nikko Station, the public-transport version runs entirely on foot, passing Kammangafuchi, a tranquil stone pathway lined with red-bibbed Jizo statues beside a river, before reaching Toshogu Shrine to admire carvings including the Three Wise Monkeys and the intricately decorated Yomeimon Gate.
The private-vehicle version covers the same walking route but adds a drive up the mountain via the Irohazaka road to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, one of Japan's three most celebrated waterfalls—a scenic detour not practical to fit into the walking itinerary in the same time.
