About this experience
The guided tour of Catania begins at Castello Ursino, commissioned by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia on a former Norman fortress; the castle has a square plan with an inner courtyard and four round corner towers.
After admiring the remains of ancient Roman baths, you reach the Catania Fish Market, the vibrant heart of the city.
From the market, a staircase leads directly to Piazza del Duomo, surrounded by Baroque buildings and dominated by the Elephant Fountain, symbol of Catania.
Here you will visit the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, on the site of the saint’s martyrdom. It was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, and inside you can find the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini and several Aragonese kings.
The tour continues towards the Teatro Bellini, one of the most famous theaters in Italy, in Neo-Renaissance style.
After a short walk, you will reach the Roman Theatre ( external ) and the tour ends at the Benedictine Monastery and the Church of St. Nicolò.
