Guided Hike - Fajã dos Vimes -Fragueira - Portal (PR09SJ)

This short but rewarding hike combines São Jorge’s dramatic volcanic landscape with one of the island’s most distinctive living cultural traditions. Following an old route once used by local communities, you will experience the transition from the island’s mid-altitude slopes to the sheltered microclimate of a coastal fajã. Along the way, your guide explains the traditional seasonal movements known as “mudas” and how generations adapted agriculture and daily life to São Jorge’s steep terrain. Fajã dos Vimes makes the experience particularly special. The settlement is known for its locally grown coffee, a rarity in Europe, as well as traditional weaving and handicrafts that remain part of everyday life. A certified nature guide with a university degree in Environmental Sciences accompanies the hike, providing insight into the island’s ecology, geology and cultural landscape.
