About this experience
The guided tour of Lucera begins at the Swabian-Angevin Fortress, one of the city’s main landmarks, with an imposing defensive wall about 900 meters long and up to 13 meters high, characterized by towers and bastions. Inside, there are the remains of the imperial Frederician palace and the imposing Tower of the Lioness, one of the best preserved, dominating the entire complex and offering scenic views of the surrounding area
The tour then continues into the historic center with a visit to the Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta, built by Charles II of Anjou in 1302. It is believed to stand on the site of a Saracen mosque, in Gothic-Angevin style, and houses important artworks and decorations
The tour ends with a visit to the Civic Museum of Urban Archaeology, which displays artifacts from the area, including Roman and medieval finds, offering insight into the city’s history, preceded by a pleasant walk through the historic center and its ancient gates that tell the long story of the town
