Guided Hike - Fajã dos Vimes - Lourais - São João (PR03SJ)

This hike combines some of São Jorge’s most distinctive landscapes with a strong connection to the island’s rural traditions. Travel between fertile coastal fajãs and higher inland settlements while learning how local communities once moved seasonally between different altitudes in a tradition known as “mudas.” Along the way, discover nearly abandoned fajãs, old agricultural landscapes, waterfalls and streams that reveal how closely everyday life was shaped by the terrain. The route also connects three places with strong local identities: Fajã dos Vimes, known for coffee and traditional crafts; Lourais, associated with cheese production; and Fajã de São João, valued for its preserved vernacular architecture. A certified nature guide with a university degree in Environmental Sciences accompanies the activity, adding insight into São Jorge’s geology, ecology and cultural landscape.
