Suwon Hwaseong is a flat mountain fortress that cannot be found in China, Japan, or other places, and it has both military defense and commercial functions. It is the best of the Eastern fortresses with the most scientific, rational, and practical structure. Namhansanseong is a mountain fortress from the Joseon Dynasty. It was built on a large scale in the 4th year of King Injo’s reign (1626) on the old site of Jujangseong (672), built during the reign of King Munmu of Unified Silla. Namhansanseong maximizes its defensive capabilities by taking advantage of the rugged terrain. It was a royal refuge (a place where the king and the government took refuge in times of war) where the dynasty could take shelter with its people.
