About this experience
Halifax invented the donair, and in 2015 it became the only municipal food in Canada. This walking tour takes you from Grand Parade, laid out in 1749 between City Hall and St Paul's, downhill through the streets Haligonians actually eat in.
Start with saltwater taffy from a Barrington Street candy shop, then a donair poutine at a downtown institution known as much for its warren of rooms as its cooking, spiced beef and sweet garlic sauce over fries in one forkful. Down at the water, sit inside a stone warehouse built for privateers and running as a pub since 1974: a cup of seafood chowder, then deep-fried pepperoni with honey mustard, the snack locals order without thinking twice.
One stop we do not name in advance, a surprise every time. Finish at a waterfront chocolate maker for a tasting, hot chocolate in the cooler months. Your Secret Food Tours guide lives here and settles the argument over who makes the best donair in town.
