About this experience
Beyond central Lisbon, the old port neighborhoods reveal a city shaped by the sea, fishing, and vibrant street life. Once home to the iconic varinas—fish vendors carrying baskets on their heads—these narrow streets still bustle with traditional shops, family-run restaurants, and charcoal grills serving the day’s freshest catch.
We’ll begin with a warm pastel de nata and a bica before exploring Mercado da Ribeira, meeting a fishmonger to discover the day’s catch and, when in season, tasting prized percebes. We’ll sample salt cod and tinned fish, try muxama (dried tuna), and visit a neighborhood wine shop for Portuguese wine and cheese.
Lunch brings seafood specialties, including barnacles and cod cakes, followed by grilled fish or a journey to Alcântara for no-frills seafood, vinho verde, and Portuguese surf and turf.
Throughout, we’ll eat like locals—slowly, generously, and with the lively port as our backdrop.
