St. Croix’s Forts, Freedom, and Beaches: A Self-Drive Audio Tour

St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands and is famous for its sun-kissed beaches, welcoming people, and radiant culture. On this self-guided driving tour, you’ll cruise from Christiansted to Frederiksted to uncover the stories that shaped the island, from colonial conquests to the fight for freedom. You’ll also find out why we drive on the left, despite being a US territory. The tour starts at Christiansted Bypass Overlook where, on a clear day, you’ll be able to see the neighboring island of St. Thomas. You’ll enter the heart of Christiansted where I’ll show you Gallows Bay, once the site of public executions. Then, we’ll swing around Altona Lagoon Beach, a local favorite for exercise and recreation. As you drive along the Queen Mary Highway, you’ll learn about the local woman it’s named after and her pivotal role in the 1878 rebellion known as “The Fireburn.”
